The big ‘D’ – as in
Disclosure
There are many angles to the UFO
phenomenon: the sightings; the encounters of various kinds; the entities; the
abductions; crash retrievals; trace evidence; angel hair; contactees; cults;
crop circles and Bigfoot for all we know. Lastly, for many, the granddaddy of
them all – the government cover up and the government’s efforts to maintain
secrecy, control information and resist disclosure. I refer to that whole bag
of worms as “Disclosure”. Disclosure is what has been bugging me for a long
time. “Why the cover-up?” has been bugging a lot of people for a very long
time.
My mission of late has been to really
gain some insights and perspectives into the riddle of Disclosure. I have been
immersing myself in the literature. I read a lot of books – some of them pretty
good and some of them just okay. I watch a lot of DVD product and
documentaries. I attend conferences. I joined MUFON. I exchange ideas with a
circle of friends who are likewise inclined. No matter what I
thought I knew yesterday, every time I dig a little more I discover some
new twist, some new perspective, some new set of facts that force me to rethink
one segment or start all over again and rethink the whole issue.
I think it was J Allen Hynek who gave
the advice – and I’m paraphrasing – to be successful in Ufology, you need to
specialize. I thought, rather naively, that by focusing on Disclosure, I was specializing. I also thought
(again rather naively) that I could write a brief article on the subject of Disclosure.
As I dug deeper, I changed my view and thought I could write a lengthy essay on
Disclosure and perhaps publish it in installments. Lately, I’ve begun to think
I could write a book on the subject and that by the time I was finished, I’d
either have to start over again or at least publish a revised, second edition.
Chasing down the subject of Disclosure
makes me feel like I’m living an episode of “The X-Files”. Just when I think
I’ve got the cigarette-smoking man
cornered, I discover that I’ve only actually peeled a piece of skin from the
onion. Penetrating a single layer may feel like a moral victory to me, but it
doesn’t make the slightest dent in the whole big, complicated, obfuscated
thing. To put it mildly, the subject of Disclosure is a mess.
Much of the mess is intentional. Some
of the mess is simply the result of stupidity of the bureaucratic kind. Some of the mess is official. Some of it you
can blame on Ufology itself. Much of it
is a natural by-product of the secrecy – that is, with only bits and pieces of
the puzzle we are left to speculate, extrapolate and theorize in order to fill
in the blanks. With so many bright
minds trying to interpret and spin the phenomena from so many points of view
and for countless ulterior motives, contradictions and paradoxes between
‘camps’ arise. Fingers are pointed. Throw in some super egos, some super
patriots, agent provocateurs and a few flakes, and stir well.
Disinformation and confusion is part of
the game. If you delve into this subject area you have to be prepared to wind
your way through an obstacle course (some might say minefield) of information.
The subject matter itself is at times somewhat unbelievable. You can come
across a piece of information that completely strains credibility and yet seems
to be true. You can come across seemingly down-to-earth, matter-of-fact
information that is fabricated. Often, one is blended with the other. Be
prepared to be frustrated and confused yourself.
At a minimum, I find I need to
keep my own overall judgments and theories flexible and adaptable. As new
information or insights emerge, my own paradigm must be ready to morph if I am
to keep up. There is a constant need for re-assessment. I am determined though,
to keep up with the can-of-worms that Disclosure is. I am also determined to
write about it and share what I have learned so far.
You can’t talk about the Cover-up VS
Disclosure issue without talking about: Who’s to blame?
The obvious answer to most people is:
The Government. Why doesn’t The Government simply own up to all this? Well,
hold on there Baba-Looey, what about Them? E.T. holds all the cards in this game. They can
overturn years of cover-up and denial with a single mass appearance - the
proverbial landing on the White House lawn. Instead, they seem to want to
observe us from a distance and refrain from direct, open contact. It is a
chilling fact that secrecy and deception seems to suit their agenda as well.
It is within our nature to consider this in an ominous way.
While I think E.T. ranks #1 as to
who-to-blame, I haven’t been able to talk to them about it or read any of their
literature or leaked alien documents.
Whatever they’re up to, I am likely powerless to do much to persuade
them. That leaves us to deal with our own society, our own government and
military. As secret as they want to be,
they are ultimately more accessible and workable than E.T.
So where does one begin? Let’s start
with my attitude. I am in favor of Disclosure. Despite my objections to the
current administration’s behavior, I am still a loyal American. If there are legitimate national security concerns
that warrant secrecy and if revealing those secrets would put us in real
jeopardy, then clearly I wouldn’t be for that. To borrow a page from Stan
Friedman, I agree that we may not want to reveal reverse technology
programs that we have turned to our advantage, that keep us safe. At the same time, I think the
ridicule and harassment instituted by the government needs to be replaced with
an honest admission that yes, E.T. has already been here and that some UFOs are their vehicles. The
government driven program of denial and ridicule has cost some people their
jobs, their careers and driven some insane. That's just wrong - and cruel. It
should stop. It's psychological warfare on your own citizens - the very people
you're supposed to serve and protect.
Compared to the rampant speculation
about all the possible implications of the phenomena, this simple admission
would be a small but significant
first step. Many people think that this will result in an upheaval of the
earth’s societies. I have no doubt that this will be difficult for some people.
It has been speculated that we have all been being prepared for this all along.
It doesn’t matter if you believe what you see in movies and TV and other media
has been planted by the government or is just the result of creative curiosity.
Regardless of the source, the fact is we have all become accustomed to the idea
of life elsewhere, E.T. and their spacecraft. The jump from science fiction
fantasy to reality is what worries some people.
I can also tell you that, in addition
to being in favor of Disclosure, I am at the same time more pessimistic than
ever. Newton’s laws of inertia apply. That is, the status quo has inertia and
wants to continue things just the way they are. Thanks to the efforts of many
people fighting for Disclosure we have seen a gradual leak of information and
the revelation that many people’s attitudes within the government and military
run counter to official wisdom.
While I realize that Disclosure (to any
degree) will be an upsetting event to some, I am still in favor of it. If what
we have been seeing over the last 60 years or so is supposed to represent a
slow, controlled release of information designed to condition us for That Day, then I think the process needs
to be sped up a little. There is just as much if not more danger in the
continued denial. If you think disclosure might
cause riots in the streets, what will happen if a fleet of E.T. ships show up
tomorrow? If the population had been sufficiently prepared for that day, the
results would certainly be a lot different than if people are suddenly shocked
and terrified.
Whether E.T turns out to be benign or
malicious the government does us all a great disservice by withholding the
information we all need to be able to deal with either eventuality. The
security and well being of the citizenry should be paramount. Having the
information you need, and having the accurate
information you need is vital to anyone’s survival. Being clueless,
confused or misinformed creates insecurity.
If ET’s visitations are benign, tell
us. If ET is truly a threat, tell us that too. But what if the government and military are powerless to prevent them from coming? The government is powereless to protect us from hurricanes and tsunamis and earthquakes too. But they do what they can, don't they? They don't pretend that hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes don't exist! We conduct drills;
provide early warning, safety tips, and other kinds of information about
natural disasters don’t we? If we are to be prepared, then part of that
preparedness should include being informed.
I recently asked a candidate for
political office about the E.T. disclosure issue. I was pleasantly surprised
that he didn’t avoid my question and actually gave me an answer (of sorts).
Two phrases from his reply really standout: “The American people should be told the truth." and, "What
exists is probably higher than Top Secret”. No doubt he thought he was giving
me a straight answer and didn't realize the irony of what he said. How can you
tell the American people the truth if the truth is classified – classified
higher than Top Secret? How can we prepare for something you refuse to tell us
about and whose existence you deny?
I'll have much, much more to say on the
subject of Disclosure in the near future. I just wish the government would too.
“In
the United States, the media and the polls show a marked interest and concern
of the public, but the official position, especially of the Air Force, is still
one of denial, more precisely that there is no threat to national security.
Actually, declassified documents, released under FOIA, show another story, one
of surveillance of nuclear installations by UFOs, and the continued study of
UFOs by the military and intelligence agencies.”
