No matter how hard I try to get things all wrapped up for Friday, I always seem to hit the wall and end up putting the final touches right at this hour. Strange, no ? Meanwhile, all is well here on Planet binnall, but we are still in the midst of the strange turnaround period where we wrap up the springtime stuffs and head towards the big Summer stuffs. So, as usual, pardon our appearance, we're in the midst of a transition.
This week, we cover the lackluster Dan Aykroyd appearance on C2C and Gary McKinnon's no-show. We look ahead to a Michio Kaku rebroadcast and the long awaited C2C debut of Wayne Herschel. Lesley has the winners of the Ghost Photo Contest. I preview this weekend's BoA : Audio with Royce Myers of UFOWatchdog.com fame. We dip into the mailbag for a query on Bob Lazar and go back in time to look at C2C appearances by Peter Davenport, James Gilliland, and last year's Rapture Debate. Plus, in Hot Newz, Sheriff Noory comes to Deadwood.
So this edition is jam packed, as usual. I hope you enjoy the ride.
The Week That Was
We left off last week with The Noor bringing in early 1990's fitness guru Susan Powter as the pop-in to talk about "lifestyle and wellness." No word on whether or not her funky haircut came up for discussion, but for those of you who remember, that was pretty much her gimmick during her 15 minutes of fame. Noory got all creative with the Friday into Saturday Open Lines, dedicating something different for each hour. It's still Open Lines, but I appreciate the effort.
Saturday, on "Ian", it was a replay of the 2.18.2006 "Ian" featuring Lynn Picknett & Clive Prince talking about the Sion Revelation. I ranted about this last week, in that there is no need for a replay of a show from 3 months ago. I see no reason why they couldn't have gotten a suitable guest host, but I don't make those types of decisions, sadly.
On C2C proper, Ian stepped in as guest host again to welcome Michael Fulton and Robert Plarr talking about alternative energy. He also featured what is apparently Part One of a Dean Koontz interview that Lesley was raving about in her C2C Rewind over at the Debris Field. That first hour or so may be worth checking out if you are a Koontz fan.
And then came Sunday night. A night that may live in infamy for quite some time. The guest for the show was David Sereda and, in the first hour, Hollywood legend and Ufology enthusiast Dan Aykroyd. C2C hardcore fans have been yearning for the Aykroyd return since he was on in 2001. We were all a little dismayed that Aykroyd was only on for the first hour, but were psyched nonetheless. What followed can be best summed up by BoA's Khyron, who said it was "one of the more frustrating wastes of potential in recent radio memory" in this week's K-Files. I couldn't say it any better, myself.
For those of you lucky enough to miss this debacle, it started out okay, with Noory getting some good UFO talk in with Aykroyd. Sereda was sort of the third wheel here, but, hell, it was Dan Aykroyd ! Then they went to break and when they came back, Noory made the tragic mistake of opening up the phone lines so Aykroyd could field calls from the C2C listeners. For Hoagland's sake, you have a major celebrity on who is endorsing serious investigation of the esoteric and you force him to endure this ? Egads.
I would be remiss if I did not point out the woman who will forever taint this once possibly awesome episode : some lady who called in and subjected us all to 4 plus minutes of her go-nowhere UFO sighting. If you heard her, you know what I am talking about, this was maddeningly long and pointless. When you consider that with commercials, bumpers, and news at the top of the show, C2C only really had Aykroyd for 40 minutes, give or take 3 or so. Allowing for that admittedly rough math, we can deduce that this woman used 10% of the Aykroyd appearance to tell us nothing of consequence, to offer no question of any depth whatsoever, and to possibly make us all a little bit stupider as a result. Whomever let her on the air needs a swift kick in the grundel.
So, in essence, we were treated to precious little Aykroyd, but what we got was pretty damn good. Sadly, it only amounted to like 20 minutes. After Dan left, David Sereda took over, guesting for the rest of the show. After the let down that was the Aykroyd appearance, my heart just wasn't into this episode. I listened to most of it and it was all pretty solid, but it felt like the party after the hottest chick leaves (i.e. boring).
Monday, The Noor welcomed Patrick Heron back to the show and, thankfully, this episode was pretty damn good. Heron was all about the antichrist and seemed to be dabbling in some of the Rapture talk as well. He made me laugh out loud once, as he sounded a lot like Michael Tsarion from a few weeks ago, but then he stopped himself, mentioned the bumper music and asked if he should wait till after the break. It was like a bizarro Tsarion moment that at least made me chuckle. If you like apocalyptic shows and wild doom and gloom type scenarios, this is one to check out for a wild ride. Fun episode. For those of you keeping score from last week, Heron has redeemed himself in my eyes and I now look forward to his subsequent C2C returns.
Tuesday, it was another bit of a patchwork episode, as Noory had originally scheduled first a 6.6.6 Festivus for the first two hours, featuring some dude named Father Felix Just, Sean David Morton, and Glynis McCants, each appearing separately. I was a little worn out of the whole 6.6.6 thing by then, so I only caught bits and pieces and, sadly, most of it was Morton.
Then, Noory had Gary McKinnon scheduled for the second half of the show, in a much anticipated interview. Strangely, McKinnon was having "phone line problems" and never appeared on the show. It was all rather mysterious. So Noory went to Open Lines for the 3rd hour. He must have heard all the yelping after this happened last week, as he managed to find Hoagland and drag him onto the show for the first half of the 4th hour. (Got all that ?) If they weren't scraping the bottom of the barrel at that point, the dug around and found Noory's interview with John Titor's lawyer and aired that in the bottom of the 4th hour, completing what may have been one of the strangest C2C episodes in quite some time.
Wednesday, The Noor had a pop-in for the first hour with Art Bell, for an update on his whereabouts and when he'd return. After years of Bell and Noory almost never sharing air time, the past month, with the two of them having a couple of pop-in episodes, has been a blast. Their repoire is a fun trip, especially Noory's questions about everyday life in the Philippines. I'm looking forward to Art's return, but it seems like it may be a ways off. Hopefully Coast can figure out a more workable guest host schedule if Art will be gone longer than another 2 weeks. Be that as it may, the Art Bell pop-in was as fun as his last pop-in and like a visit from an old friend.
Bonus points for Art and Noory's exchange about smoking and Art's revelation that he "chain smoked" when hosting the show. Good stuff. Another thing that Bell and I have in common. I also enjoyed their discussion on "being nervous" before going on the air and never wanting to listen to the show after it airs. Lots of interesting observations that I, as a quasi-radio host, can appreciate.
The full show guests were John Zaffis and Carmen Reed, talking about Connecticut hauntings. I missed this one, sadly, and have yet to hear anything about it. If you dig ghost stories, I'm sure you'd like this one.
Thursday saw an exhausted and practically breathless Alex Jones pop-in for the first hour to talk about his run-in with Canadian officials at the border. This was all pretty freaky and this was not your usual AJ here. I believe he almost cried at one point, but being that it is radio, I cannot confirm it at this time. Be that as it may, if you are an Alex Jones fan, this was a killer hour as he was at his finest here giving the lowdown on the bizarre situation mere hours after it had gone down.
I was a little put off by Noory playing the "doting dad", warning Alex to "be safe" ad nauseum. Geez, Noory, everyone's a little freaked out over this, alright, we don't need you freaking us out more by intimating that Alex is in danger. Something tells me that Noory hasn't spent much time around the paranoid.
The full show guest for Thursday was Marcus Chown to talk about quantum physics. I'll admit it, I'm not an alt. science fan. I zoned out about 45 minutes into this one and what I heard sounded like some heady stuff. I'm sure the alt. fans dug this one. Notable was Noory asking, "Aren't we close to seeing the light of the big bang ?" to which Chown replied, "We did it in 1965." Ouch. You can't win 'em all, Noor.
"The best laid plans of mice and men do often go astray." That pretty much says it all regarding this past week of Coast. Tons of on-paper potential that turned into smoke.
The Week That Is
This weekend on Coast to Coast, we kick it off with The Noor and his beloved Friday into Saturday Open Lines. No word yet on the pop-in.
On Saturday, it's "8 Hours of Ian" Part III, as we get yet another double-shot of Punnett and nary a guest host for the now-stagnant "Ian". For starters, in the early show slot, it will be the 2.25.2006 episode of Ian, featuring Gregg Braden talking about lost knowledge of some sort. Sigh. There's so much "wrong" going on here, I don't even know where to begin. First of all, Ian's spin-off show is kind of withering away here, with two back-to-back reruns, especially after two strong Ross Mitchell episodes and a plethora of potential guest hosts out there. I would like to see more attention paid to this show, but it's been sort of treading water since it's creation anyway.
Following that will be a live Coast to Coast proper with Ian Punnett, of course. I am confused here, because apparently Ian will have the second half of his interview with Dean Koontz. I presume it was taped last week, as that was when Part 1 aired. Now this is the kind of innovative programming I was expecting from "Ian", the C2C spin-off, but instead it will be on C2C proper, on the tail end of another week of "8 Hours of Ian". I'm confused ... and I miss Hilly Rose. If you caught last week's episode with Koontz, you'll want to catch this one, I'm sure.
Sunday, C2C rolls out another re-broadcast, this time more of a classic, as Art Bell sits down with his old friend Dr. Michio Kaku from 12.15.2003. They talk about "nuclear scenarios." Sounds confounding but delightful. In honor of the return of the good doctor, here's yet another Haiku for Kaku ...
Kaku re-broadcast.
Still worth a listen, says I
Art Bell is the host. Feel free to send in your Haiku for Kaku and I'll toss it in the mailbag next week.
Monday, The Noor returns to action with Wayne Herschel. Hopefully, Herschel got his phone situation figured out and he can be on the show and save me from yet another impromptu Open Lines session. The topic will be ancient astronauts and how humans are descendants of them and other wild tales. Should be killer unless it is all Sitchen references.
Tuesday, the venerable Rosemary Ellen Guiley returns to Coast to Coast, talking about ghosts, demons, EVPs, and other ghoulish stuff. She'll also delve into dreams. Guiley is usually pretty solid, but I can't seem to recall any particular episode featuring her, so she's more of a workhorse than anything. Her repoire with The Noor is excellent if I recall correctly.
Wednesday, the guest is TBA. No word yet on who it is. Hopefully it will be someone blockbuster.
Thursday sees Charles Seife coming on the show to talk about the cosmos. Sounds mildly interesting. Hopefully it won't be too boring. If Seife has some charisma, it could be killer.
Decent week, on-paper, we'll see how it shakes out.

This Week : Royce Myers, creator of UFOWatchdog.com . Royce and I discuss some of the more notorious hoaxes in UFO history, including the Jonathan Reed case and the story of the Alien Autopsy film. We also discuss the creation of UFOWatchdog.com, the infamous Sean David Morton lawsuit, why the aliens are partly to blame for Ufology's woes, which Ufologists does Royce think cut the mustard and what he doesn't like about Ufology today. It's a hardcore edition of BoA : Audio that you'll have to hear to believe.

Next Week : TBA
I'm in the midst of lining it up, but we keep playing "tag". I should have an announcement soon. If we can't get it together in time, we'll skip a week and finish up w. the final two episodes of Season One in a week's time. Either way, I'll let you know.

Letter #1 :
Howdy. You're doing a great job! Hope you haven't been inundated with this
info, but BobLazar.com is back online. What about an interview with him?
Cheers and keep the home fires burning.
MS Thanks for listening, MS ! Also, thanks for the suggestion of Bob Lazar as a potential guest. Right now, we are very close to taping the final two episodes of Season One and the show is about 90% in the bag until September when Season Two will begin, but I will add Lazar to "the list" that I am compiling for potential Season Two guests. Keep your eyes and ears peeled, because there's a good chance it may happen.
Letter #2 :
Tim,
Do you think you'll ever end up on Coast to Coast ?
Brian in Santa Fe, NM
Someday, I'm sure. Unlike a lot of folks I run into, I am not desperate to get on Coast to Coast. I've never asked to be on the show. Someday, maybe I will, but right now, I am far too busy to appear on Coast. Down the line, when I have some projects that I think need more publicity than I can create on my own, I'll start asking to get on the show. If I were to put an over/under on when I will be on C2C, I'd say it is within a year. That is unless I am secretly banned or something.

This Week in C2C History
6.9.2005 : Katie bar the door, because it was a pier six brawl last year on C2C, as The Noor moderated a debate between Ken Parsons and John Anderson over whether or not the Rapture was going to happen. Here was my account of the debate from the 6.10.2005 binnall report :
"It was no contest as far as the debate went, John Anderson ate Parsons alive. Anderson came onto the show with both guns blazing and expected a knock-down drag out. Parsons seemed to think this was a friendly discussion, not a theological street fight and, as such, was hilariously outmatched by the vehement Anderson. Though, at times, I wondered if Anderson did anything other than attack the "Left Behind Series" (which I've never even heard of but it sure got a lot of free advertising last night) and plug his DVD.
Parsons fought back in the final 15 minutes of the competitive portion of the debate, but it resembled the thrashings of a mortally wounded animal more than a "come from behind" rally. Much like the Great Velikovsky Debate, the C2C audience proved it's insanity once again by picking Parsons as the winner, perhaps feeling bad for their battered compatriot. I'm sure Parsons's numerous C2C references, including mentioning Hoagland, endeared him to the Coast faithful. Great episode. 6.9.2003 : One of the most enchanting C2C guests, James Gilliland appeared on this date three years ago. Gilliland invited The Noor out to his ranch to see UFOs, but as of this writing, Noory has so far chickened out. Here's what Gilliland had to say about his interaction with aliens, "He described his encounters with "exquisite looking" Pleiadian beings who "time shift" between their world and ours on ships that "totally align with their occupants." Gilliland, who first communicated with the beings in a meditative state, believes they have come here to help us evolve." (c2c.com)
6.9.1999 : Remember when Peter Davenport would show up on C2C and dazzle us with great UFO cases ? I do. Here's a snippet from his appearance 7 years ago on Coast : " Peter Davenport joins Art for an update. About one half hour before air time Peter got a sighting report from a couple in Las Vegas. Also, Peter plays an audio clip from a dramatic sighting report from Kernard (sp) Nebraska that came in just a few hours prior to the Vegas report. Art asks Peter about Bob Bigelow's new survey about people's belief that the government would not tell the public of alien evidence. Peter relates another report from a couple who witnessed between 25 and 32 UFOs outside a casino in Las Vegas back in April of this year." (artbell.com cd rom)
