Sweet dreams are made of these. God damn, what an exhausting day. As a sort of a teaser, I'll be vague, but I taped two future editions of BoA : Audio today, both sessions spanning a little over 2 hours each. Add to that a blizzard that appeared here in Boston, which of course requires shoveling, and I'm rather knackered. I'm not complaining though, for some odd reason I'm at the point beyond exhaustion to a weird jubilation, which is nice.
My jubilation only extends so far, though, and we still need to talk about this past week's Coast to Coast AM, which included no Harry Shearer, Noory calling an audible on a guest, and perhaps the most entertaining thing of the week being a pre-recorded acceptance speech at a radio banquet. It was an interesting week. Ahead of us on Coast is a Robert Bigelow appearance with Art Bell (sure to be a classic) and discussion of the Zodiac killer.
Additionally, we've got the bells (BoA : Audio w. Mac Tonnies (Part 2) preview), the whistles (Hoagland post-heart attack 8 years ago on Coast), the streamers (mailbag discussing the mysterious Steve Quayle), and the gags (Hot Newz reveals the truth about that Nick Redfern movie you've been hearing about).
It's the binnall report, god dammit, and you're gonna like it.
The Week That Was
So, I missed quite a bit of C2C last week, especially towards the middle of the week (Wednesday & Thursday). 1000 apologies. Things should be back on track this week, one hopes.
We left off last week with The Noor off in Hollywood somewhere, presenting Art Bell with his lifetime achievement award. In his stead, we got a rebroadcast of the 1.23.2006 Skeptic's Cage special. I excerpted my recap of the show in last week's binnall report, so check there for what went down. Suffice it to say, it was good to great.
Saturday on "Ian", IP had forensic archaeologist Charles Pellegrino on the program to discuss the Jesus Tomb and other buried ancient relics. I missed the episode, but, as is custom, Lesley did catch it, so here's her review from C2C Rewind : "I have to say this show ended up being a little more interesting than I had expected. Pellegrino was actually involved with the tomb and had a few interesting facts and stories that I hadn't heard before."
Saturday night on C2C proper, I was really looking forward to hearing from Harry Shearer with some Hollywood stories. And then he went and disappeared from the schedule. As best as I could find out, there wasn't any tangible explanation for this nor any word of a rescheduling. To make matters even worse, the first hour guest for the show was Peter "let me explain this in excruciating detail" Lance. Argh. The full show guest was Lauren Weinstein to talk about the FBI spying story. Luckily for Lauren, Ian Punnett was the host and not Art Bell, lest he be pulling his hair out from all of that Devil's advocacy. Needless to say, once I saw Shearer replaced with Lance, I replaced C2C with sleep.
Sunday night on Coast, George Noory was the host and the guests were David Talbott and Wallace Thornhill discussing Velikovsky. I gave it a shot, but the whole conversation came across as really, really dry. I just couldn't get into it. After about an hour or so, I gave up trying.
I did, however, listen to the first hour, where Noory played Art Bell's lifetime achievement award acceptance speech and I enjoyed that part quite a bit. Noory's introduction of Bell was "so Noory" that it had to be heard to be believed. And, of course, Art's speech was quite interesting as well. Coupled with the amazing pictures of Ian, Art, and The Noor all meeting for the first time, the entire package was quite fun. C2C needs to smash that 4th wall more often as this was far more interesting than the full show interview that followed.
Monday night, The Noor had Chris Panos as the guest to discuss radical Islam. After about two hours of volatile discussion on why the US simply must destroy Iran, The Noor pulled the plug on Panos, who truly lived up to the mispronounciation of his name (if you catch my drift).
Despite Panos and his extreme, dare I say "radical", point of view about Islam, he was pretty entertaining in a car wreck sort of way. The entertainment value went up after an hour when Noory opened up phone lines and let C2C listeners have at him, including one who called him a "disinformation agent". Not as caustic as Brother Michael Dimond, but close. Good episode if you enjoy that feeling of "this interview is going horrible wrong" which is always fun in small doses and on rare occasions.
Tuesday night, Noory celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Phoenix Lights with, first, Lynne Kitei (who I missed) and, later, Richard C. Hoagland (who I caught) in the 1st hour. As luck would have it, I turned the stream on just in time to hear Hoagland finding a way to tie the Phoenix Lights into the Ken Starr investigation. Sigh. I thought you "don't do UFOs", Richard.
The full show guest was William Warwick discussing both the Phoenix Lights and the Norfolk Incident UFO cases. This was a particularly strong episode and Warwick may have been the most "real" C2C guest in quite some time. Less erudite than some of the stuffier talking heads they usually have on the program, but he made up for it in realism. He was so real, it sounded like he was going to drop an "F bomb" on Noory a few times, which made it all the more fun to listen to, because you know Noory, or one of his minions, had his finger on the censor button the full three hours. Good, entertaining episode.
Wednesday, TBA turned into a half and half episode. First half was Mish Shedlock talking about economics. The second half had Sean David Morton talking about "predictions". I missed this episode entirely and the only real buzz I heard was disgusted buzz regarding SDM being on Coast again. That said, there was this great snippet from usofe.com poster DeSota who did, in fact, catch the episode, "Noory just kept urging him to stay on predictions rather than go on tangents regarding convoluted conspiracies to take over the world." Damn. Sounds like I may have missed a funny one.
Thursday night, the week wrapped up with Paul Eno as the guest with a topic of spirits and multiple dimensions. No buzz on this one, probably because it just aired last night. From the recap @ c2c.com, it sounded alright, so I may have to go back and catch it.
In total, I can't really judge the week, only to say I was disappointed that Harry Shearer no-showed, enjoyed the Art Bell acceptance speech, thought William Warwick was great, and enjoyed Chris Panos in a subversive sort of way. Otherwise, I either didn't catch it or it didn't impress me much, in another pretty "bleh" week.
The Week That Is
We kick things off tonight with The Noor reclaiming his Friday night throne and being joined by the proverbial Queen of C2C, Linda Moulton Howe for the first hour (or so) of the show. LMH will be talking about that honey bee story from last month that I still find dreadfully boring. Hopefully she'll stick around for the 2nd hour, take some calls, and discuss something a little more esoteric. Standard Friday into Saturday Open Lines to follow. Speaking of which, is it just me or has Morgus been MIA for quite a while now ? I don't want to jinx it by mentioning it, but also can't let it go unnoticed for another week.
Saturday on "Ian", old IP looks to be shining a turd as the guest is Daniel Amen and the topic is Alzheimer's disease. Not promising on paper, but the Rumpelstiltskin-esque Punnett seems to be able to weave straw into gold, so this may turn out to be a compelling episode.
Saturday night on C2C proper, Art Bell has Robert Bigelow as the guest to talk about NIDS. Unlike when Art had Bigelow on last Summer and talked only about his space ventures, this one may be the one where we hear some really good stuff about what NIDS has been up to all these years. I presume Art will be inquisitive as ever, as he's been on a hot streak for the last month or so. Potential strong Coastie contender.
Sunday, Art's guest is Maurice Cotterell talking about gravity and other cosmological stuffs. Dark horse to be quite good, though it looks dry on paper. I'm afraid for it having to follow the "Bam Bam" Bigelow show on Saturday though.
Monday night, The Noor gets all "Cold Case" on us with Ed Neil discussing the Zodiac Killer. I'll be honest ... I love the Zodiac. Huge fan of the Zodiac. I'm going to really enjoy this episode, so it's hard to gauge how the rest of you may feel. If you dig true crime, puzzles, occult motifs and mystery, you'll like it.
Tuesday, Dr. Geoffrey Simmons is the guest. The topic is evolution. I think Simmons is anti-evolution, from what I can gather. Probably going to be a dry episode, unless Simmons is a zealot and then it will be uncomfortably amusing.
Wednesday, Noory welcomes Olav Phillips to the show to tell us about how he harnesses technology to gather UFO information. Why do I have a feeling this is eerily similar to Ryan Wood's UFOdex ? Either way, it's fascinating in a sociological way and it deals in UFOs, so I'm sure I'll dig it. Anyone named Olav has to be entertaining, I think it's a law somewhere.
Thursday is ... TBA. This past week, we just got Sean David Morton for half a TBA, which I predicted for a while then gave up on. So, we'll go back to my tried and true TBA prediction ... Jordan Maxwell. Let's see it happen.
For the most part, this looks to be a strong week, highlighted by Bigelow, Zodiac guy, and Olav. If the others are better than good, we may be looking at a very strong week.
BoA : Audio, Season Two
This week : Mac Tonnies (Part 1 of 2)
Our conversation continues with esoteric pundit Mac Tonnies, in this special extended edition of BoA : Audio that will run close to two hours or so. First, we'll spend about an hour digging into Mac's "cryptoterrestrial hypothesis", which has sparked considerable debate and thought throughout esoterica in the last year. We will go in-depth on the CT, leaving nearly no stone unturned and barely a question unasked. It's a must-hear episode, taking you to the bleeding edge of esoterica.
In the second hour, or so, of our conversation, we'll have a big picture discussion on Ufology, including its lack of young people, its evolution on the Internet, disclosure and other hot button topics. We'll also find out about Mac's work with the Society for Planetary SETI Research and his as-yet-unfinished novel "Women and Children First". Plus, as always, tons more.
His website is posthumanblues.blogspot.com
You can hear an MP3 preview of our Mac's appearance on BoA : Audio on MP3 * Just right click and then "save target as". Or you can listen to it in Streaming Audio.
Next Week : TBA
Details to follow shortly @ BoA
binnall report mailbag
Would you post a photo of Steve Quayle? I have seen all my "heroes" except him.
Thank You in advance,
Beth This one made me laugh out loud, literally. The Steve Quayle Picture Mystery. If Joe Vee weren't tending to his newborn son, he'd be wetting his own pants with laughter over this e-mail. Thank you for the inadvertent chuckle, Beth.
Here's the story. As you know, I make Hot Newz, so I need the heads of these Coast folks. In the past and still today, BoA and our various friends and allies could never find a Steve Quayle picture online ... never. It became a running joke for a while, but kind of died out in the last couple of years until I got this e-mail.
Strangely enough, during the height of the Quayle Picture Mystery, a former associate of Quayle e-mailed me a picture that he claimed was SQ himself. Since the whole thing was rather shady and I can't verify that it is actually Quayle, we never used it. Plus it was in black and white, making it perfectly useless for almost all forms of Hot Newz hilarity, which is why we wanted it in the first place.
I'd rank the Quayle Picture Mystery somewhere in the pantheon of esoterica between Moon Hoax and how Ian Punnett can make awful shows good (I say it's alchemy).
Question ? Comment ? Gripe ? Query ? Love Letter ? Write to tbinnall@hotmail.com and we'll sort it all out.
This Week in C2C History
3.16.1999 : File under : some things never change. A week after having open heart surgery, Hoagland returns to C2C to share the gory details and, of course, dub the heart attack that felled him as an "anomaly".
"Richard Hoagland joins Art at the beginning of the program and tells us about his ordeal. Richard is grateful for being the subject of Great Experiment #7 and believes it really worked and asks participants not to let up. Richard says his heart attack was an anomaly because the condition of his arteries really didn't warrant an attack. " (artbell.com cd rom)
3.17.1998 : Paul Kimball's favorite punching bag (this year) Karl Korff engaged in a debate with some guy named Jim Dilettoso. The recap doesn't share what the topic of the debate was, but based on the last sentence of the recap, we can be sure it was an esoteric debate.
"Kal Korff challenges Jim Dilettoso to a debate. It was a fair debate and a debate consensus poll was taken throughout the night. Web site visitors indicated that Kal Korff won the debate by a wide margin. Although callers afterward, indicate BOTH debaters lost credibility in their field. " (artbell.com cd rom)
End Notes
There. Done. I'm off to bed. Thanks, as always, for coming along for the ride.
