Coming at you faster than the Christmas season, it's this week's binnall report. It's been a strange few days of unseasonably warm weather here in Boston. I've been frolicking in the streets to the sounds of Noory before the snow comes pounding down and ruins my good time.
This week, along with our usual madcap tomfoolery, we kick off Coastie season. For the second year in a row, the stars of Coast do battle over just who was the best of the year. Meanwhile, we've got a stunning 4 pictured Hot Newz that chronicles what Noory was up to on Monday when Bell was hosting. binnall report mailbag, This Week in C2C History, The Week that Is and, of course, The Week that Was. Stop searching, it's all here.
The Week That Was
We left off last Friday with Noory about to welcome Judy Belushi-Pisano & Tanner Colby on to talk about their Jim Belushi book. I skipped out on this, sorry folks. Sadly, it the process of skipping out on this, I also missed Richard C. Hoagland in the 2nd hour. Damn. Standard Open Lines followed.
Saturday Night Punnett featured Dr. Judith Orloff to talk about psychic vampires. I can barely keep up with Punnett episodes after I listen to the 1st hour, so this one was no different. From what I hear, it was decent.
I got it all wrong in last week's "tbr", as on Sunday C2C re-ran the 1993 edition of Ghost to Ghost, not 2003. Uber kudos to C2C for rolling out such an old school episode. I sampled some of it, but didn't want to overdose on ghost calls before G2G '05.
Speaking of which, you all know Monday was Halloween and, as such, Art Bell hosted the 13th annual Ghost to Ghost special. As expected, this was an awesome episode. First of all, getting Bell on a weekday is nothing short of miraculous nowadays, so I was just thrilled with that turn of events. Also, I noticed the obvious clear improvement in bumper music. Never before have I realized just how lame the weekday bumper music is on Coast lately.
And, finally, Bell has a way of making the episode seem like an "event" and not just a show. The way he kept saying "Ghost to Ghost '05" and hyping it made me think, "God damn, this is the best radio show ever created." Kudos to Bell for an outstanding episode ... now come back every Sunday please.
Tuesday, The Noor fulfilled the wishes of countless C2C fans, including binnall, by bringing back Graham Hancock. Twas the first time I'd heard Hancock, but I was duly impressed. Hancock reminded me of all the other C2C regulars who try Ayuahasca and get all zany. And while I found most of his theories to be more than a tad esoterica and ephemeral, his delivery and style keep the episode's quality high.
Wednesday saw a first hour pop-in from Ufology's nemesis Seth Shostak. Noory, for some insane reason, asked Shostak what he thought of UFOs, despite Shostak appearing on C2C to crap on UFOs for the last few years. Shostak even seemed bemused by Noory's question and no-sold it, moving on to the Larry King UFO special. Noory ... what the hell ? Meanwhile, Shostak was his usual smarmy self, making awful jokes and begging for money for SETI. Ugh.
The full show guests were Ed and Kris Sherwood talking about crop circles, UFOs, and flying humanoids. Good stuff all around. My only qualm was that I'd lost computer access on Wednesday and this episode highly depended on being able to see the accompanying pictures. I enjoyed the discussion on humanoids, which was the primary reason I wanted to hear the episode. There was a tad too much ephemeral stuffs, but it was decent nonetheless.
Thursday featured Peter Ward talking about aliens and the search for alien life. Ward was fairly mainstream and pretty scientific. I noticed that Ward had a penchant for potty words, but that seemed to dissipate over the course of the episode. Again, decent stuff, but nothing to go out of your way for.
The Week That Is
I don't even know where to begin tonight. For weeks, nay months, I've been looking forward to C2C's coverage of the Crash Retrieval Conference in Las Vegas. For the past two years this has been one of the very best C2C episodes of the year. I'd count last year's edition in the top 5 episodes of 2004. So ... you can imagine my shock and dismay when I saw that this year's coverage was shaved down from the full 4 hour festivus to a mere 1 hour of interviews. What ?!
Yes, tonight, first hour only, Linda Moulton Howe interviews Jim Marrs and Richard Dolan. I'm throwing out some serious jeers to the C2C braintrust who made the decision to trim the episode down so drastically. I'm so very disappointed. Standard Open Lines will follow the 1st hour. I'll be boycotting those 3 hours as a way of showing my disdain for the scrapping of the C2C UFO CRC Special III. I'm not sure who wants to hear 3 more hours of Open Lines after an Open Lines replay on Sunday and Open Lines on Monday, but I'm no Noory (thank, God). Boo to you, C2C, boo to you.
Saturday Night Punnett is all about Dr. Allan Botkin, who will be on to talk about After Life Communication. Sounds intriguing. Let's hope IP doesn't find a way to screw it up.
Sunday, The Noor tackles his usual 1st Sunday of the month duties with Dr. Steve Haltiwanger. I can't quite figure out what they are talking about, but it seems to be about the electrical element to the human body. Sounds boring.
Monday, Noory ... Steve Quayle ... reuinited ... and they're all about the giants. Despite the fact that Quayle was on Saturday Night Punnett like 2 months ago to talk about giants, I am hopeful for some good stuff on Monday. The Noory / Quayle dynamic is excellent and Quayle continues his image rehab with more talk of giants and less of terrorism. At this rate, I expect Quayle to make a huge comeback in 2006.
Meanwhile, I am making a special request to Noory (since you broke my heart by killing the Crash Retrieval Special) ... please, for the love of God, get an update on Steve Quayle's vivacious rock star daughter. Inquiring minds (me) want to know.
I can't stay mad at Coast for too long, as on Tuesday they'll be having a special "Intelligent Design Debate", featuring Richard C. Hoagland "and friends". No word yet on who the friends will be, but I'm hoping for some Marshall Klarfeld action. I'm afraid we'll get the folks from the "God, Man, and ET Roundtable" from last June. I presume this is another "Richard C. Hoagland joint", so hopefully the quality will be top notch.
Wednesday, we journey to Atlantis with Will Hart. I don't know much about Hart, but I know a fair amount about Atlantis. Could be good, could be bad, depends on Hart's knowledge, delivery, and charisma.
Thursday looks to be another good to great episode with Mark Gumbinger talking about nautical legends. Ar, matey, sounds great. If Noory dons an eyepatch for this episode, I will be thrilled. Seriously, though, it looks to be a great episode with a topic rarely covered on C2C and delving into haunted lighthouses, ghost ships and what-have-you.
Friday, still more Open Lines, I presume.

The 2005 Coasties Are Coming
Last year, the vast readership of "the binnall report" culled the hardcore C2C fans from the array of Coast forums and message boards. A ballot was produced. A vote was held. The end result : The 2004 Coastie Award Winners.
Well, kids, the time has arrived to begin the grueling process that is determining this year's Coastie Award winners. There's been some rule changes and some new awards that will be unveiled soon. Over the course of the next few weeks, we'll feature some 2004 Coastie retrospectives and then, at the end of November, the 2005 Coastie Ballot will be rolled out and Coastie voting will begin.
This is your chance to honor the very best on C2C in 2005. It's your Coastly duty. It's the Coasties.

binnall,
What's your favorite C2C bumper music song ?
Pete in Long Island, NY
Hmm. I'll reserve this to just Noory episodes as I'm painfully unfamiliar with the standard fare that is offered by Bell and Ian Punnett lately. I like all of Bell's tunes, for the most part, and IP just seem to love the '80's. As far as Noory bumper music goes, I'd pick "Eve of Destruction". That said, I think they need to add some new tunes to the rotation as some seem to get played at least once a week every week.
Letter #2
binnal,
Will the world end in 2012 ?
Bill in Baltimore, MD
Not that I know of, Bill.

This Week in C2C History
11.4.2004 : Dr. Ronald Katz had the unfortunate job of following both C2C's Election Night Special and the critically acclaimed 11.3.2004 solo Alex Jones episode dubbed by some to be "Alex Jones : Unplugged". Sadly, Katz could not keep the stream of fantastic episodes alive, as I quipped in "the binnall report" last year : "Much to my suspicion, Dr.Ronald Klatz on Thursday brought me down like a bad acid trip." (credit : the binnall report : 11.6.2004)
11.4.1999 : For those of you bemoaning Richard Hoagland's endless C2C appearances, here's one from 6 years ago today to prove that RCH was always C2C's quasi-science advisor : "Richard Hoagland joins Art with a few updates. In regard to the objects seen in a video taken during the eclipse from Turkey, there is now no foundation for the November 7th impact rumor. The objects have been determined to be flashbulb reflections. Richard talks about a mock anthrax attack to begin Nov 6th. Richard says he has found some links to flight 990 and Operation Migido (sic). He feels the airplane was attacked from inside, like through the computers. " (artbell.com cd rom)
11.4.1997 : Looks like Art Bell was stirring up some trouble on this episode from 8 years ago : "Art reads a fax from the Republican National Committee regarding last night's show featuring Steve Bassett. The chairman, Jim Nicholson, requested some rebuttal time on Tuesday night's show. Art came up with two questions for him, one soft, and one more difficult. Before the end of the show last night, Art predicted there would be some kind of unexpected problem and Mr. Nichols would cancel his appearance. And he did." (credit : artbell.com cd rom)
