11.3.6

We're slightly up against the clock this week, as I have a busy Friday evening and things only look to get busier as I head towards Las Vegas and the UFO Crash Retrieval Conference IV. I'll note here in the foreword, that there will be no binnall report next week, as I'll be right in the thick of it in Vegas. We'll resume our madness in two weeks time, with lots to say, I'm sure.

That said we've got plenty of material for you this week, including a look back at an incredible week of Coast to Coast AM, including Ghost to Ghost, Joe McMonagle, Darrel Sims, and a ton of other awesome episodes. We look ahead at the upcoming week that features Roger Leir, Steve Quayle, and two potentially strong debuts. We dip into the mailbag for some insight on how Open Lines were handled back in the early days of Coast. We dig deep into the vault at an episode from 9 years ago when Art Bell "stuck it to the man". We preview tomorrow's BoA : Audio expanded edition with Paola Harris and, of course, we've got George Noory's World Series scrapbook in Hot Newz.

Without any further delay, let's get down to it.

The Week That Was

When we left off last week, The Noor was back in the usual swing of Friday into Saturday Open Lines. The pop-in guests were June DiMaggio and Mary Jane Popp on the show to talk about Marilyn Monroe. I missed this, but it sounds pretty damn good and I'd like to see them go back to the Monroe mystery sometime on Coast. Standard Open Lines followed, with the Halloween themed "Fright Night Friday", apparently being people's scary stories.

On Saturday's early show, Ian had Katherine Ramsland on the show to talk about serial killers. This is probably the only episode of the past week that I missed, but thankfully Lesley covered it in her awesome C2C Rewind, "For the most part this was an interesting show. Ramsland had a bit of an abrasive personality and managed to dismiss Phillip Carlo and Truman Capote as not knowing much of anything about serial killers and in Carlo's case as being too easy to believe what they tell him, even though she admits she never read Carlo's books. Kudos to Ian once again! This time for playing the Danny Elfman theme from Sleepy Hollow as bumper music!"

Saturday on C2C proper, Art Bell continued the Halloween stylings, this time with one half of the GIS, Barbara McBeath to discuss and listen to EVPs. Apparently, Brendan Cook was sick and couldn't make it. Despite my usual non-enthusiasm for EVP episodes, McBeath proved me wrong and turned in a pretty damn good appearance. Richard Hoagland could learn a thing or two from the GIS, as their appearances are so spread out, that each time around they still manage to entertain those of me, despite hearing them many, many times.

The entire scenario with just McBeath being on was unsettling, on some ways, like listening to Hall without Oates. I kept waiting for Cook to show up after Art would ask a question or after an EVP would play. Along those lines, Art was spot on during this show as well and entertaining as hell. He wasn't afraid to say that he interpreted an EVP different from Barbara and he kept harping on his first question to her, where she replied that EVPs don't scare her. It started out weird but then got hilarious, as every 15 minutes or so, Art would be like, "How does this not scare you ?"

Sunday night was an episode for the books, as "alien hunter" Darrel Sims was the guest and he was talking about the UFO phenomenon. Sims was really fantastic and he brought his unique charisma to the interview that often left you glued to the radio. He'd make bold assertions left and right and tease information like it was going out of style. It actually got to the point that Art seemed to get kind of annoyed over Sims teasing stuff, but not following through on the tease. Art seemed to sense what a lot of us did about this interview, that it seemed like a lot of smoke and not much fire. Interesting, entertaining episode, for the wild wild west feel to it.

Monday, George Noory was the host. Rosemary Ellen Guiley was the guest. The topic was magic and all the various sideroads that entails. After the Sims rodeo the night before, this episode felt kind of a little too low key. That said, Guiley knew her stuff and brought a ton of information to the table here. Personally, I found it a bit too dry, but others seemed to really dig it a lot, including theusofe.com's gnostic knowledge, who said, "The best one Georgy boy has done in sometime." A strong episode, hampered by being surrounded by a week of really good episodes.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the first hour pop-in guests William Kalush and Larry Sloman who were on to talk about Houdini. I almost never catch first hour guests, but I caught this one and was very impressed. You may have heard of these guys, as their new book made headlines recently, since it alleges that Houdini was some kind of spy. Kalush and Sloman were fascinating and I hope we can hear a full show with them soon.

Tuesday, Halloween night, the C2C annual tradition continued with Ghost to Ghost AM. There's not much to say, you know the routine : Four hours of open lines with callers best ghost stories. This is one of those episodes you just sit back and enjoy. I'd say the callers almost always had great stories, so the screener did a commendable job there. Art was also great in his reactions and overall emcee qualities throughout the night. One of the very few C2C episodes that has that "big event" feel to it.

Wednesday night, the fantastic Joe McMonagle was on to talk about remote viewing. McMonagle has an amazing ability and he doesn't overhype it like some faux remote viewers who appear on Coast. He had thoughtful insights into remote viewing and its history, admitted where he was accurate and where he wasn't, and treated the subject with a refreshing, no-nonsense style. Strong episode.

Also, apparently he was asked about C2C sacred cow Ed Dames and McMonagle ripped on him pretty bad. I missed that segment, but I'm trying to find it now, as it sounds pretty hilarious.

Noory wrapped up the week with the UFO Extravaganza (as he called it). Apparently, Timothy Good couldn't make it, so the show turned into a revolving door of UFO guests, including Robert Farrell in the first hour, Jim Marrs in the second hour, and a little bit from Saturday's guest Roger Leir at the top of the third hour. Farrell was decent and Marrs was excellent, as usual. I sensed some nice repoire between Noory and Marrs and hopefully it is the start of some more regular appearance from Jim. Decent episode, but a bit too "thrown together" for my liking.

Outstanding week, top to bottom. So many great episodes, it would be hard to even pick one that was the proverbial best. G2G, Sims, GIS, McMonagle, UFO Extravaganza, all were awesome. Kudos to Coast for a job well done.

The Week That Is

At the conclusion of this week's binnall report, we'll be treated to The Noor and his usual Friday into Saturday night Open Lines routine. The pop-in will be loveable French psychic / friend of Gary Busey, Dr. Louis Turi. I can't wait to see what Turi claims he predicted this time.

Ian and his magical C2C AM Live (or "Ian") features C2C stalwart Howard Bloom to talk about how Iran may be setting up some kind of ambush. Bloom is sort of the antithesis to Alex Jones, in that he is a hardcore believer in the muslim terrorist, mainstream version, of the war on terror. And while I usually disagree with his take on things, there's no denying that he makes for compelling and informative radio. He also one of the very few guests who can have a solid outing with Noory, Bell, or Ian. So I expect a solid episode of "Ian" here.

Saturday night on C2C proper, Art Bell has another guy who has been around C2C for ages, Dr. Roger Leir. Leir will be on to talk about alien implants, no doubt, and hopefully he'll also talk about the infamous Varghina case in Brazil that was so remarkable. Art is all about the aliens not necessarily being benevolent, so I expect he'll explore the dark side of ET implants.

Sunday night, Sir Charles Shults joins Art to talk about space travel and Mars. If my recollection is correct, Sir Charles usually surprises me by putting in a better than good performance. I think his Mars stuff will be very interesting, but I suspect the space travel part may turn out to be a snoozer. But, next week, I very well may be singing the praises of that portion of the interview. Such is the way of Shults.

Monday night, George "The Noor" Noory returns to the helm to welcome Brent Raynes, making his C2C debut. Good to see Coast getting some new blood in the mix. Raynes will be talking about the connection between UFOs and psychic experience. If this includes a story about how Sean David Morton was probed, I'm all about it. I don't know much about Raynes, so you take your chances with this episode. I like the subject matter, so it could turn out to be quite good.

And then it's the return of our old friend TBA on Tuesday. The plucky little bastard is like a bed bug, just when we thought we'd gotten rid of him, he scurries back in to ruin our good time. Since it's been a while since we've seen TBA, I'm going to dust off an old chestnut and predict a Jordan Maxwell appearance.

Noory's all about the bling bling on Wednesday with the debuting 'Mish' Shedlock, economic analyst, who will be telling us all about the bursting housing bubble and the crumbling economy. Sigh. This episode sounds more depressing than the usual doom and gloom C2C offerings. That said, it should be pretty interesting and a nice change of pace from some of the ghoulish material we've had the last few weeks. Now if only Coast would feature more Andre Eggelletion in this role.

Someone grab the binoculars, because Thursday we're going on a Quayle watch. C2C regular / giant expert / terrorism expert Steve Quayle, that is. SQ will be on to talk about aliens and giants and I'm already dancing with glee at the idea of it all. Quayle could revitalize his case for C2C Regular of the Year Coastie honors with a strong showing here.

It's a top to bottom pretty strong week ahead on Coast. Four longtime C2C guests (Leir, Bloom, Shults, and Quayle), two intriguing debuts (Shedlock and Raynes) and the mysterious, masked TBA. Hats off to the programmer who put this week together ... you're in the zone.

Letter #1

Hi Tim!

A little bit on Open Lines. When I 1st started listening to Art when he was on 6 Radio Stations here in the Western US, Art had Open Lines 3 out of the 5 days during the Week. Friday there was always a Guest. But between Mon and Thur usually 3 of those nights were Open Lines.

This is how it was for the 1st couple of years when I started listening.

Dave

Thanks for the input, Dave ! Sounds like the history of C2C Open Lines is more diverse than I could ever imagine. From what I can gather, back in those days, just about anyone could call and say any wild thing they want and a lot of classic Coast moments sprung from those calls.

Sadly, I think it's a part of the "underground" history of Coast that we may never see again, as the show is so popular now that the phone lines are clogged with a lot of the "lowest common denominator" folks. (Just my opinion, mind you.)

Letter #2 :

Hey Tim,

I thought about listening to Brad Steiger, but that ghost stuff sort of creeps me out since I live alone and my cat can't protect me from the monsters in my closet.

The West (aka Mr. Rogers) interview made me nuts, along with the bazillion other folks across the land. I bet all the FastBlasts that George probably received lead to the Westus Interruptus. I wonder if he was wearing a cardigan? He sounded pretty much like he was full of sh*t, too. Even for C2C standards. I just could not bear to hear his voice anymore.

Oh, and about the Cayce thing. I enjoyed that interview, too. And it was 3 almonds, BTW, not two walnuts. :-)

Monteen McCord of www.hawktalk.org

Great to hear from my friend Monteen McCord, the hawk wrangler. Thanks for correcting me on that bit of Cayce trivium. The Noor would never forgive me for making that mistake, had it gone uncorrected.

I believe Noory mentioned West's voice as well, so it sounds like it was a recurring theme. There was certainly something amiss with that interview, I'll say that. Whether we will ever know the story behind it, I can't surmise.

Also, I'm sure your cats could handle at least a small monster.

This Week in C2C History

11.3.2004 : An all time classic C2C episode, dubbed by this author as "Alex Jones Unplugged". I raved about it at the time as you can see, "He's referencing Michio Kaku (Type 1 civilization), Tesla, and giving a tacit endorsement to Ufology. I almost fell out of my chair in anticipation when Noory asked him about the alien phenomenon. Noory, hands down, did one of his best interviews ever with this episode and Alex Jones NEEDS to be a C2C regular." (binnall report, 11.6.2004)

11.3.2003 : Richard Jackson, paranormal expert, was the guest talking about various ghostly topics, including exorcisms, of which he'd seen a few, "Jackson said "I was lifted by my neck about a foot off the ground and those six or seven seconds seemed like an eternity." One of the most frightening events Jackson said he ever witnessed was during one exorcism, when the eyes of the person undergoing the ritual, changed from human to reptilian-appearing." (c2c.com)

11.4.1997 : From back in the days when Art Bell used to "stick it to the man" ... "Art reads a fax from the Republican National Committee regarding last night's show featuring Steve Bassett. The chairman, Jim Nicholson, requested some rebuttal time on Tuesday night's show. Art came up with two questions for him, one soft, and one more difficult. Before the end of the show last night, Art predicted there would be some kind of unexpected problem and Mr. Nichols would cancel his appearance. And he did." (artbell.com cd rom)

End Notes

And that does it, my friends. Thanks for joining in on the fun. I'm sorry I'll miss you all next week, but I'm sure the report in two weeks will be one for the books.

Plugs : Tomorrow @ binnallofamerica.com, Paola Harris on a special expanded edition of BoA : Audio. We're talking about some of the legends of Ufology, exopolitics, where Ufology needs to go in the future, and the differences between American and European Ufology. Sunday, Lesley's C2C Rewind and smoker dave is updated. Monday, R.Lee's Trickster's Realm. Tuesday, Lesley's Grey Matters. Wednesday, Khyron's The K-Files. Thursday, Hot Newz.

And then, we'll go dark until next Monday or so, when I will be in Vegas. I think it's the first time in over a year that we haven't updated BoA, so it's a great time to check out the archive of our columns or audio and explore BoA for some nuggets of goodness you may have missed in the past.

binnallofamerica.com ... Las Vegas bound.

With that, I bid you farewell for now. If, by chance, you are in Las Vegas for the UFO CRC and you see me, feel free to stop and say hello. I'm always interested in hearing from BoA readers and listeners.

Until you hear from me in two weeks, this is binnall ... signing off.
