(News Watch Archive)

From the Desk of binnall

So, it has come to this. After weeks of falling lower and lower on the BoA depth chart, I am somewhat saddened to announce that this will be the final News Watch. The grueling BoA schedule just cannot keep producing top notch editions of NW like we did in the early part of 2005, when this column debuted. And rather than throw together half assed weekly perusals of the news cycle, we've decided that it is better to devote our time to more pressing matters. So, welcome to the News Watch finale.

This week, in the Hot 5 from the Debris Field, China looks for Disclosure, Stonehenge gets some recognition, a lady weds a dolphin, Malaysia loves Bigfoot, and Flutie his an ultrare dropkick. The impending fad status of the microchip is addressed in "Future News Now". Khyron takes a look at the Sin City Special Edition DVD. I look at the latest news from the Red Sox in "My Fandom : Year 2.5" Oscar is coronated Noory Story Showdown II winner. And, I look at the big news stories of '05 in a special editorial.

Thanks to everyone who has enjoyed News Watch over the past year. It has been a fun column to do, for the most part, but I also feel it never really got going like I'd hoped it could. I want to especially thank Lesley and Khyron for their contributions over the course of '05 for this column. You can still find top notch stuff @ their sites. Lesley's is The Debris Field and Khyron's is khyron.net.

Don't weep for News Watch. It may return someday in a different format, but for now, a one year run is all I'd really planned for it and, by the end of this year, it sorta sputtered out as BoA : Audio and SNP took most of my time away from the weekend, leaving precious little to devote to NW. Thanks for the ride, News Watch, it was fun while it lasted.

Future News Now

More RFID Propaganda: Computer chips get under skin of U.S. enthusiasts (infowars.com)

I've been predicting it ever since I'd heard Alex Jones predict it and now it is coming to fruition. Microchips in your body, they're cool now ! Oh crap.

We can only hope this popularity for "the chip" will extend only to techno nerds and people in their late 20's who haven't found a job yet.

Rest assured that someday when my kid comes to me to get "chipped", he will be thoroughly beaten or given a "time out". But, us noisy conspiracy theorists, cannot stand in the way of "progress" forever, so it looks like we are screwed.

Mikey Sklar, a 28-year-old Brooklyn resident, said, "It does give you some sort of power of 'Abracadabra,' of making doors open and passwords enter just by a wave of your hand."

The RFID chip in Sklar's hand, which is smaller than a grain of rice and can last up to 100 years, was injected by a surgeon in Los Angeles.

Tattoo artists and veterinarians also could insert the chips into people, he said. For years, veterinarians have been injecting similar chips into pets so the animals can be returned to their owners if they are lost.

Hot 5 Stories from The Debris Field

The links are straight from Lesley's blog The Debris Field. The commentary is pure binnall.

1>China overtakes Canada in outer space search for aliens (Canada Free Press)

Noooo ! Just after I'd thrown my lot behind Canada as my "nation of choice" when it comes to Disclosure, China goes and brings in a bunch of money to move towards Disclosure as well. However, I'm not jumping off the Canada bandwagon just yet. I suspect that China will be as tight fisted with its UFO secrets as the US has been, especially considering they probably want to go to war with us at some point.

The Peoples Republic of China will give "life-on-other-planet" Canadians a run for their money on pushing the UFO agenda in 2006. ...

Now that they’ve got the money, China may get to ETs before Canada ever does.

"Government officials in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province, announced on Tuesday that they had received $20 million from a Taiwan-based company to build a UFO research facility in China." (TCV News, Dec. 11, 2005).

2> Stonehenge on Shortlist of New World Wonders (Phenomena)

I've meen to Stonehenge. It's magnificent. I have no problem with it being listed among the Wonders of the World. There are, however, some problems with the others on the shortlist, most notably The Eiffel Tower. Are you kidding me ? First rule of "Great Wonders" should be "if we have pictures of it being built, it ain't a wonder". I've been to the Eiffel Tower and, while it is interesting and fun, it isn't a "wonder".

The Grand Canyon. That's a "natural wonder". The Great Wall of China ? Sure. It's a wonder how they ever made that thing back in the day. Statue of Liberty ? Nope. It's just a statue, folks.

Stonehenge has been short-listed in a seven-year poll to identify the seven wonders of the modern world.

The other 20 entries include the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal in India, the Colosseum in Rome and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The Kremlin, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Sydney Opera House and New York's Statue of Liberty are also finalists.

Voting will now continue throughout the year to select the seven wonders, which will be announced on New Year's Day 2007.

3> Obsessed tourist 'marries' Israeli dolphin; 'I'm not a pervert' (UnderwaterTimes.com)

If you have to stress "I'm not a pervert", chances are ... you are a pervert. What made this story even more bizarre was that the lady married a dolphin named "Cindy". Um, wouldn't this be a "same sex, different species" marriage. Geez. Don't we have enough going on that we don't need to raise the ire of the crazies like Bill O'Reilly who will seize on crappy stories like this to show why the government needs heavy handed restrictions on marriage.

Till death do us part? An unusual wedding ceremony was held in the southern resort town of Eilat on Wednesday, as Sharon Tendler, a 41-years-old Jewish millionaire from London married her beloved Cindy, a 35-years-old dolphin, Israel's leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported Thursday.

The groom, a resident of the Eilat dolphin reef, met Tendler 15 years ago, when she first visited the resort. The British rock concert producer took a liking to the dolphin and has made a habit of traveling to Eilat two or three times a year and spending time with her underwater sweetheart.

4>'Bigfoot' fever grips Malaysian rainforest (yahoo via reuters)

At first, I thought this would be the new pandemic of 2006 : "Bigfoot fever". But then it turns out that it is just a huge boom in popularity for Bigfoot over in Malaysia. The article, insanely, says that they think it is a sham because of the popularity of the movie "King Kong", which makes very little sense, considering KK's weak box office showing. Meanwhile, expect Tom Biscardi to turn up in Malaysia any day now with some money making scheme.

Bigfoot fever is gripping Malaysia, with local newspapers and the official news agency reporting sightings of a huge ape in southern rainforests.

In one reported sighting, an indigenous man claimed he saw a 10-feet-tall (300-cm-tall) ape standing on two legs beside a river in heavy rainforest in Johor state, the director of the state's national-parks service told Reuters on Sunday.

"He said it was hairy all over, like a gorilla," said Hashim Yusoff, director of Johor National Parks Corp.

5>Flutie Hits NFL's 1st Drop Kick Since '41 (Earthlink)

Pretty amazing stuff from my hometown Patriots. I was watching this game at a friend's house and I was thoroughly flummoxed by just what the hell had just gone down. You have to appreciate something being done once every 60 years and Flutie pulling it off successfully. A hell of an end to a fine career. Much like this week's News Watch.

For 21 years, Doug Flutie's career has been defined by one play. Now the "Hail Flutie" has its historic bookend.

The 43-year-old Patriots backup converted the NFL's first successful drop kick since 1941, making an extra point in the fourth quarter of the Miami Dolphins' mostly meaningless 28-26 victory Sunday over New England.

"I think Doug deserves it," said usually dour Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who broke into a wide smile when his sprightly quarterback split the uprights off one bounce. "He is a guy that adds a lot to this game of football, has added a lot through his great career - running, passing and now kicking.

Sin City Special Edition DVD (2005)

Posted @ Khyron.net, 1.5.6

Among the more dubious practices in Hollywood is the release of multiple DVD's for a single film under the guise of being 'special' or 'extended' in some way. Not so much dubious in that they don't include interesting or entertaining new features, but that I find myself owning several DVD's for the same movie. A quick glance through my DVD collection shows 2 Dawn of the Dead's (3 if you include the remake), 2 Saw's, and now one more duplicate: Sin City.

Voted as Khyron's favorite movie of 2005, I wont say much more on the merits of this excellent and highly faithful comic book adaptation, but directors Robert Rodriguez, Frank Miller, and Quentin Tarantino made one helluva cool movie.

So how does this new special edition DVD hold up? Pretty well despite a very annoying sound flaw.

First I'm going to talk about said flaw, because it really turned me off to the whole presentation of the film. This may not get on the nerves of others as it got on mine, but in the first of the Sin City stories (That Yellow Bastard, starring Bruce Willis and Nick Stahl), an ever-present ringing noise could be heard behind several pieces of dialogue. It went away before long, so didn't ruin the whole movie, but it drove me nuts trying to get to the bottom of it.

I went so far as to rewire my surround sound system to try to fix it--to no avail. I haven't ruled out the possibility that I got a bad disk, but I don't think that's the case. As the 2 disk set comes with a theatrical disk and an extended one--and the ringing is present on both.

Alright, so annoyances aside, the extra features here are dynamite. Most notable among them is the option to watch each story on it's own. In the theatrical version, the 3 main stories were intertwined with a short opening and ending sequence. Now you can choose to watch them individually and with deleted scenes added.

There's nothing pivotal that was added, but for the fan of the graphic novels, you'll notice a few items of interest. My favorite is a more light-hearted scene in which urban monster Marv visits his kindly mother's house.

Otherwise, the special features are all very Robert Rodriguez. There's a cooking lesson of all things, plus plenty of commentary (including one recorded at the film's first screening, so you can feel like your in a theatre), and even the option to watch the movie with green screens and no special effects. The later of these really helps you appreciate the work that went into creating the Sin City's unique visual appearance.

If you don't own Sin City yet, this is a must get DVD. If, however, you were a sucker like myself and eagerly bought the barebone's DVD already, you could probably do without it. But if you choose to get both, I'm pretty confident you wont feel cheated over owning two.

My Fandom : Year 2.5

As we look out over 2006, things look mediocre for the Red Sox next season. The gist of what seems to be going on with the Red Sox is that they are dropped quite a lot of the stars who were on the infamous 2004 championship team. Gone are Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller, Doug Mirabelli, Mike Myers, and, of course, Johnny Damon.

So much can be said about the Damon story that hasn't, at least by me. The mood here in Boston was like no other. First, it was days before Christmas and we expected something big that week. Then, at 11 at night, when most folks had gone to bed or were about to head to the sack, the news breaks : "Damon signs with New York". The first general reaction was "What ?!", followed closely behind by a disgusted, "Oh, f**K".

What makes it worse, obviously, is that Damon is going to the hated Yankees. It's insane. Over the course of the next few days, Boston was generally crapping all over Damon, the Red Sox management, and New York. No one was immune from the hatred of the fans. Damon shaving his beard and cutting his hair was surreal and it all seemed like a bad dream.

This leaves the Sox with a huge hole in center field and still needing a shortstop. Apparently, they're set on starting Kevin Youklis at first, which I'm indifferent about. He'll need to prove himself to me, I'm in doubt of his defensive skills.

They did add two new guys playing second and third, Loretta and Lowell, respectively. I hear good things about them, but I also hear Lowell is overrated. The addition of Beckett to the starting pitching rotation is key and the only bright spot of an otherwise dismal off season. If he lives up to the hype, the Sox will have strong starting pitching, for sure. They still have problems with their relief pitching and I've not seem that addressed much in the off season, aside from holding onto Mike Timlin. Hopefully, some of those young guys they brought up at the end of last season can deliver as well.

Meanwhile, I'm interested in two other teams this offseason. First of all is the Toronto Blue Jays, who have made a boatload of big moves. They seem to see some unraveling in the AL East, despite the success of Boston and NY the last three years. Expect to see big things from the Blue Jays. I'm hopeful that they can act as spoiler in the Red Sox favor and put some hurting on the Yanks.

Along with the Blue Jays, I'm becoming a fan of the Dodgers. I see they have picked up lots of former members of the Red Sox, like Bill Mueller, Nomar Garciaparra, and the interesting Derek Lowe. They even signed the wacky manager Grady Little, who was run out of Boston after the 2003 playoff debacle. So, I'm keenly interested in seeing how the Dodgers turn out.

With only about 6 weeks until Spring Training starts, I'm hoping that the Sox can keep Manny, fill the holes in their roster, and turn into a force. I'm not as down on the team's prospects as some of those baseball "experts" out there, but I never trust those clowns anyway. It will be an interesting season, that's for sure.

2005's Big Stories

I hope it's not too late to go over some of the big stories of the year 2005. I'm sure there are many that will not cross my radar, but here's what does.

Hurricane Katrina, of course. This thing was like the storm we've been waiting our whole C2C listening lives for. It was a glimpse of that anarchy and armageddon we've only been promised by the darker C2C prognosticators. It was also the event of '05 that proved the government stinks and can't do anything right.

The Space Shuttle may crash. How could I forget NASA's big foible of '05, the relaunch of the space shuttle. It did necessitate nearly 15 Richard C. Hoagland appearances on C2C, so it had to be big. Another incident which showed up that NASA is past its prime.

Terri Schiavo, to live or to die. For three weeks or so last April, everyone had an opinion. This little story that started out on the esoteric wires years ago finally made it to the big stage and became the media circus we all feared it could be. I'll recall what I said back in April when this went down and that is that this story was a precursor to set the precedent for "mercy killing" our elderly. Take it to the bank.

The London Bombings. The big terror event of 2005. Within moments after the bombings, we had evidence coming out that this very well may have been an "inside job", including the wacky dude who said they were running drills on the "exact same scenario at the exact same time." Hmm. If you weren't freaked out about terror drills before, you should be now.

Goodbye Pope John Paul, hello Pope Benedict. Sadly, our old friend PJP II died in April, despite the best efforts of C2C psychic Fr. Wingate trying to keep him alive. And, we saw the crowning of a new Pope in that dude they call Benedict. And while I'm still smarting they didn't elect a black Pope, Benedict has been good so far, except for that whole New World Order thing he endorsed, the wacky nut.

Jackson Schmackson. We covered it hardcore here in "News Watch", with our weekly recaps of what went down in the trial of the new century. It really turned out to be kind of a downer and the verdict wasn't all that surprising after the many twists and turns of the trial.

TomKat. Yes, Tom Cruise loves Katie Holmes. He jumped on a couch. He's not gay, he swears. Katie Holmes gets her career revived. Everyone wins. (Except Oprah, who needs a new couch).

Bird Flu. It's coming to get you, despite what The Noor says. Another in an endless stream of "pandemics" that have been promised for us and then never materialize. Another "false threat" to help bring out guard down for whatever killer disease actually will kill us all.

So as you can see there were some interesting events in '05 that freaked us all out. There's still lots more to expect in '06 including unrest in Israel, potential war with Iran, more foolish celebrity news, and probably a few natural disaster thrown in to freak everyone out and continue the march to the end of the world. Plus there's tons more crap that will happen that even I can't fathom. I'd never expected Terri Schiavo to become the worldwide story that it did, so I'm sure there are others out there that are ready to become this year's "big story".

End Notes

There you have it. This concludes the News Watch finale. Thanks to everyone who stuck around all year to see how it went down. Remember, there's still plenty of stuff to discover @ BoA and, I think, in the long run, we'll have much more time to devote to developing new stuff for the site now that our weekends will have a smidge more free time.

Plugs : Tomorrow @ BoA, Lesley gives out tons of free advice for the C2C brain trust with "Dare to Dream", her suggestions for how to improve C2C in '05. Khyron stops in on Wednesday with another edition of "The K-Files". Thursday, my insiders reveal to me what George Noory's original plans for his Pay Per View special were and you won't believe that Hot Newz. Friday, the binnall report. Saturday, random updates @ BoA while we get ready for the second half of BoA : Audio, Season One. Sunday, SNP and smoker Dave. Next Monday, something new and different, I'm sure. binnallofamerica.com, the next big thing.

Thanks again to everyone who checked out NW this week. Sorry it had to end, but change is good and we'll be using this change to bring high quality goods to the BoA audience far and wide.

Until we meet again, be safe, be prepared, and be real.
